GAITHERSBURG, MD, June 1, 2010 – MedImmune announced today it received a Montgomery County 2010 Business Outstanding Achievement in Recycling Award from the Montgomery County Division of Solid Waste Services. The award is given to businesses for their outstanding efforts in implementing or improving their recycling, waste reduction or buying recycled programs.

Within the past year, MedImmune’s facility exceeded the county benchmark for recycling by recycling 51 percent of its required waste, a 13 percent increase from 2008. In addition, the overall (voluntary plus mandatory) recycling rate more than doubled, soaring from 42 percent in 2008 to 87 percent in 2009.

“This award marks a milestone for our recycling and green programs. It is a testament to our green team members and facility staff who went above and beyond what was required to further reduce our environmental impact and earn this well deserved award,” stated Gene McMurray, director of Facilities for MedImmune’s Gaithersburg headquarters.

MedImmune jumpstarted their existing recycling program in 2008 when they formed a site Green Team. The team was charged with identifying and executing new initiatives that would further reduce waste, increase recycling and reuse materials when possible. The cross-functional Green Team consists of members from departments ranging from Information Technology to Research and Development to Finance and Engineering.

A key element in MedImmune’s recycling success comes from the expansion of recycling to the laboratory areas in 2009. MedImmune’s lab operations management team worked closely with the facilities department and the company’s waste management vendor to find efficient and economical ways to recycle plastic grades 5 through 7. Prior to 2009, only plastic grades 1-4 could be recycled due to limited capacity, leaving nearly half of the lab plastics unrecyclable.

In addition to the laboratories, green construction initiatives in both expansion and renovation projects helped further the company’s commitment to sustainable business practices.

Recycling provisions were incorporated into construction contract bids, a recycling education program for sub-contractors was created and recycling documentation was collected from the construction companies to ensure compliance. The construction teams also found creative ways to reuse expensive materials, which conserved energy, and reduced costs overall. In addition, MedImmune’s newest building project will also be among the first LEED-certified laboratories in the county.

“This is yet another milestone in our continuing drive to be a corporate leader in green initiatives,” said Toni Stiefel, director of Corporate Responsibility & Community Affairs. “Sustainability is an increasingly important element of responsible business practice for MedImmune worldwide.”

About MedImmune

MedImmune, the worldwide biologics business for AstraZeneca PLC (LSE: AZN.L, NYSE: AZN), has approximately 3,300 employees worldwide and is headquartered in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Gaithersburg, Md. – MedImmune was named by The Gazette of Politics and Business as the top business in the State of Maryland. The list of the 53 top businesses and organizations in the state was released at an awards ceremony held September 23, 2009. It acknowledges the top 53 businesses and organizations in Maryland based on annual revenue, employee growth, product or service innovations, community service efforts, steerage through the economic downturn, and reasons they are good places to work.

“I applaud these exceptional Maryland businesses that are consistently on the leading edge of innovation and doing their part to help through their pro-active community service programs. To make the 53 list is a great accomplishment,” said Cliff Chiet, publisher of The Gazette P&B. MedImmune will be profiled in a special section as part of the September 25, 2009 edition of The Gazette of Politics and Business.

MedImmune was recognized for its exceptional growth, community service programs in health and science, education for young people, and innovative scientific and medical technology. Toni Stiefel, director, corporate responsibility and community affairs, accepted the award for MedImmune and noted, “We are extremely honored to be recognized by the Gazette for doing exactly what we are passionate about—helping patients and our community live better lives. The work our employees do outside of our laboratories and manufacturing sites is as important as the technological advancements that we make inside our facilities.”

- For Sixth Consecutive Year, MedImmune Commits $175,000 –

Baltimore, MD — May 4, 2009 — MedImmune has awarded grants to five pediatric fellows to assist their conduct of original research in the field of viral respiratory diseases. The fellowship research grants, which underscore the company’s dedication to advancing research in pediatric health, were presented for the sixth consecutive year through MedImmune’s Fellowship Research Grant Program. The selection was made by an independent committee comprised of external pediatric reviewers from across the United States.
